- The film was originally to be set in China but production difficulties became insurmountable.
- In the final chase sequence just after 007 lands on the tanker, Sanchez fires at Bond hitting the truck's fuel tanks. The sound of the bullets ricocheting off the tanks plays the start of the James Bond theme.
- At the end of the film, the credits say "James Bond will return". He did six years later. The longest hiatus of the series.
- David Hedison returns as Felix Leiter, the only actor to portray the character twice. The character has appeared in seven Eon/Bond films, and been played by six different actors.
- When Timothy Dalton says "I guess this is a farewell to arms" this is an inside joke referring to the scene being shot at the Hemingway House
- In preparation for his role as Franz Sanchez, Robert Davi met with several people involved in narcotics smuggling.
- Pedro Armendariz Jr. who played the president of Ismuth is the son of Pedro Armendariz, who played Kerim Bey in From Russia With Love.
