Die Another Day brought upon us the 40th anniversary of the James Bond series. 20 films and 40 years, what a ride! On a mission in Korea, James Bond is captured and tortured for 18 months. He is swapped with Korean agent Zao for his freedom. However M has swapped him not to save him, but because she believes Bond has cracked and is giving away information. However Bond knows there is another mole in the area and escapes to uncover what Zao is up to and to uncover his Western ally.
Brosnan's fourth foray as 007 is great as usual. The guy is suave and a badass. Only Connery contained both qualities. Walking through the hotel looking like a bum is hilariously amusing. Once again Brosnan proves that he IS James Bond and delivers brilliantly. A shame that this film would prove to be his last but Daniel Craig will do just fine.
The villain in this piece is Col. Moon who changes himself into Gustav Graves. Sounds ludicrous but it works and is for the better because Gustav has loads more charisma than Moon. The sword fight sequence between Bond and Graves provided the film's highlight, and certainly ranks as one of the film series' more memorable sequences. Zao is his henchman and adequate enough.
Halle Berry AKA Jinx portrays Bond's love interest in DAD. Jinx trying to recreate the famous Honey Ryder sequence of emerging from the water looking sexy is hilariously dumb and goofy. Bond needs to raise his standards if he thinks Jinx is good looking. Why the producers decided on Halle Berry sporting cropped hair is beyond any reason. Jinx looks like a man for god's sake! That's the bottom line. It's also comical with Halle Berry in the laser scene yelling at Bond that she's in danger even though he's currently contending with an enemy while simultaneously avoiding numerous laser beams. Hold on, James Bond has something to deal with first, you dumb bitch! How anyone thought they could make a film for her out of this without it turning into a turkey is anybody's guess. Obviuosly MGM came to their senses and shelved the proposed Jinx spin-off, which would've bombed anyway just like Catwoman. Oh, and who could forget her "Yo, momma" line? That shit doesn't belong in a Bond movie.
Madonna's theme song is ridiculous and is among the fucking worst. What the hell was that crap?! Did anyone out there actually like that abysmal shit? Madonna also makes a cameo as a fencing teacher tutoring Rosamund Pike. "I don't like cock fights." Heh, funny if you're seven years old.
Following Elektra as a gorgeous baddie is Miranda Frost. The turncoat who betrayed her surperiors for the gold medal in fencing. Rosamund Pike is both gorgeous and a merciless woman. In the words of the great Lloyd Christmas, "The first time I set eyes on Mary Swanson, I just got that old fashioned romantic feeling where I'd do anything to bone her." Every man feels the same way regarding Miranda Frost. Too bad it was she that died and not Jinx.
A trip down memory lane occurs when Q introduces 007 to his latest gadgets. Seeing all those past gadgets was a nice touch and proves that James Bond does bring back some gadgets in good shape! During that sequence Q introduces the new BMW with invisibility capability. Nice looking car that's loaded with extras.
Of course, who can forget Miss Moneypenny and her usual short encounters with Bond? There is a nice surprise with her at the end, which is also one of the funniest scenes in the film.
As for as the CGI goes, well, some are good and some are atrocious. Jinx diving backwards into the sea is the most laughable scene in the series. Same goes for Bond wind surfing.
It's also quite fun to spot the various Bond references placed in the film.
In conclusion, Die Another Day is nice addition to the Bond series but nothing to write home about.
