Goldfinger, the
third entry of the Bond
series was released in 1964. Sean Connery gives his
best performance as Bond. The movie cost 3.5
million dollars to make, and recovered it's
production costs a few weeks after release. The
success of Goldfinger was so extreme that movie
theaters were open 24 hours a day to accommodate
ticket demands, at one time Goldfinger was in the
Guinness Book of World Records as the fastest
grossing film of all time. Shirley Bassey's theme
song out sold that of My Fair Lady the Oscar
winning film which was released at the same time.
Goldfinger made James Bond a household name and
resulted in a massive merchandising
blitz. If it was released today it would have earned
close to $300 million.
Auric
Goldfinger was such a immense
villain that it took two actors to bring him to life,
Gert Frobe a German actor who played
Goldfinger and Michael Collins the unforgettable
voice of Goldfinger. Auric Goldfinger is a man
who is so infatuated with gold that knowing he
can't possess the holdings of Fort Knox he
decides to destroy (the knowledge that this will
make his own holdings more valuable is a nice
incentive). In addition to Goldfinger is a larger
than life henchman named OddJob the mute servant.
Harold Sakata,
a wrestler, portrays OddJob, the immensely strong
and mute body guard. Odd Job is so loyal to
Goldfinger that he refuses to deactivate the
atomic bomb even after Goldfinger leaves him to
die.
Cec Linder stars as Felix Leiter
though his part is small(Leiter's always is) he
still does a good job. Honor Blackman stars as
Pussy Galore, Goldfinger's personal pilot and
love interest for Bond, who saves the day by
turning on the gold obsessed millionaire by switching
the gas. She is
an interesting character who intends to live in
solitude after receiving her
payment.
Goldfinger debued the "most
famous car in the world" James Bond's Aston
Martin D.B.5. This silver beauty of a car had all the
usual refinements, including a passenger ejector
seat, bullet proof windows, homer tracking screen,
and right and left wing machine guns. This was a
graphic intensive Bond
film and also features a miniaturized homer. Ken
Adam created the set that was his personal
favorite, Fort Knox or "the cathedral of gold."
Goldfinger is truly a timeless adventure film,
and the MOST acclaimed Bond
movie of all time.
