:. Moonraker .:

In the eleventh installment to the Bond series a Moonraker space shuttle, on loan from the United States to England, is hijacked, Bond is called in to investigate. Following the success of Star Wars, Cubby and company decided to make Moonraker instead of For Your Eyes Only as advertised at the end of TSWLM. Whilst this film was inspired by Star Wars, this is not meant to imply that Moonraker copies from the former. Don't forget that only the last 20-30 minutes of the film takes place in space. Prior to space the film takes us on a voyage through Venice and Brazil; Two of the best locations of the series. After some investigating Bond soon realizes Hugo Drax plans on eliminating Earth's population and create a new race in his own image. To accomplish his mission Drax hires Bond's prior nemesis in Jaws. Jaws plays an important role for Drax but at the end turns into a good guy who falls in love with a nerd! What the hell?! A final battle between Jaws and 007 would've been better and have made more sense.

Lois Chiles plays Bond's love interest in the film. Holly Goodhead is working undercover for the CIA on loan from NASA. She's simply beautiful with an attitude and a great name. I bet 007 found out if she lived up to her name. The other bond girl is Dufour, Hugo's personal pilot. In a memorable scene her betrayal to Drax is repaid with a date with dobermans who eat her alive. Great sequence and one of the most dark.

Q-Branch makes a suitable contrbution to the film. Two wonderful vehicles make an appearence. You have a gondola that morphs into a hovercraft. And you have the original Q-boat that enables 007 to take off in a hang-glider. And who could forget the wrist dart gun? Connected to the nerve impulses and saves Bond's life on two occasions.

The score by John Barry is one of his weakest but Bassey's title song, returning for the third time, is romantic and fitting. Sadly Moonraker would mark the last appearence by Benard Lee, who'd succumb to cancer. Some people hate Moonraker with a passion and others just view it as mindless entertainment. Well, this reviewer is of the latter. Three words: Entertaining silly crap
