The movie is an uninspiring mess, plain and simple. The villain of the piece, Elliot Carver (played by Jonathan Pryce), just looks like a overgrown smurf, and not one time did I feel he was the villain of the movie. Let's face it, how can someone as menacing as a hotdog vendor be considered a villain for a Bond film. If that's not enough, how about the fact that if his plan is sucessful, in earning exclusive broadcasting rights in China for the next hundred years, is one of the most idiotic plots ever to grace the screen. Let him have broadcasting rights in China, I don't care. Pryce's acting was good though, but the character needed some work. The henchman, Stamper (Gotz Otto), is at times ruthless, and at other times a Doogie Howser look-a-like. No offense to Doogie, of course. The only scene, that he did look the part was when he had that awesome gun firing at Bond. Just the walk he used got some applause. The ever-reliable "Q" (Desmond Llewelyn) is still around, showing off his latest gadgets and telling 007 to "grow up." Decent gadgets this time around by "Q", but nothing special. I guess I'm the only one that didn't like the Mobile phone. The garage chase (Which took a month to shoot) is boring, and just plain stupid. The Walther PP9, Bond's new gun was given to him at Wai Lin's house. Am I the first to say this, but shouldn't he have gotten that from Q? I like his quote, "The new Walther, I asked Q to get me one of these". That just makes like Q Failed in getting him the new Walther, and he had to get it from an ouside source. That's a travesty for the series. The gun Bond will be using for the rest of the franchise was supplied by the Chinese government. Pretty smart.
Next, we have the Bond girls. First up is Paris Carver (Played by Teri Hatcher). If you've read other reviews of this film, almost all of them talk down about her. I even read at another Bond site, that the best scene she was in, was when she was dead. But I have to say this. Why in the hell would the producers even have her caracter in the film! It's so idiotic! Are we supposed to believe that Bond and Paris were, at one time together? I was watching a Bond special awhile back, and it was Brosnan that suggested to the writers, that a former flame comes back into the life of Bond. He doesn't even know what's good for the series. It's just too unbelieveable. To top it off, she is now a married woman, and Bond commits adultery with her! It's a sad day, when people cry over Bond smoking, but he can shack up with a married woman. "As long as Bond doesn't light up" is what the smoking advocates say. I could rant more and more about this subject, but I'm just wasting time.
Wai Lin (Played by Michele Yeoh) is supposed to be the Chinese counterpart to the British's James Bond, but is not! To me, she's just stubborn. "One of my favorite scenes of her. Bond says "Get on the back of the bike". Wai replies "Why? Are you trying to protect me?". What I would say if I was Bond "Oh, shut up and get on the back of the bike woman!" Just pointless scenes like that ruin her character. The producers had to make her so damn independant, that she questions Bond at every turn. Truly irratating. People say she's a partner to 007, but this is a BOND MOVIE!! Not a Bond/Lin film!
More rants. I can't stress enough on this subject, but here goes. What has happened to location shots? Bond travels to these exotic places, and most of the time it feels, like they're just shooting on a set. Bond and Wai Lin using the banner to escape Craver's clutches. It took a week to shoot that mess, and it wasn't even good. Who wants to see Bond scream like a little girl anyhow. The car is too plain. It just looks like a old Honda Accord. I'm glad they went with a much fancier car in The World Is Not Enough. David Arnold's score doesn't have a memorable piece whatsoever. Well, to be fair to Mr.Arnold, I couldn't hear half the score, because the special effects drowns it out. I didn't even know there was music playing during the garage chase when I first saw the film!
The title song is the worst of the series. Even Surrender, which some folks out there wish it were the title song, was garbage too. The main titles had too much stuff going on that it hurts the senses. In closing, I really don't like this movie as you've already read my take on it.
