The 19th Bond film in the series and Brosnan's 3rd, The World Is Not Enough is an action packed thriller filled with beautiful women and odd looking henchmen. The film starts off with the longest pre-titles sequences for a Bond film. It's also one of the best which begins with an out of the ordinary escape from a high-rise, includes an exciting boat chase on the Thames and ends with an explosion sending Bond crashing down upon the Millenium Dome shattering his shoulder! Brosnan is at his best displaying charsima and at times anger when confronting Renard for the first time. Brilliant scene. It's been said that the third Bond film for the actor playing 007 is his best. Connery had Goldfinger, Moore had The Spy Who Loved Me and now Brosnan has The World Is Not Enough. But this is not Brosnan's best so that theory goes out the window.
Has there ever been a more beautiful villain in a Bond film than Sophie Marceau? Even the gorgeous Paluzzi in Thunderball doesn't equal Marceau in terms of beauty and heinous behavior. The woman is gorgeous and one of the series best characters. At first, MI6 believes she's a victim but as it turns out Elektra is a manipulative bitch who has M kidnapped and gets off on torturing 007. The ice cube scene is something to behold for sure.
Playing her henchmen, or little puppy dog, Renard feels no pain due to being shot in the brain killing off his pain indicator. Interesting concept for a change but doesn't pay off as Renard is boring as hell. She also employs Gabor, a Predator look-a-like who serves no real purpose other than trying to look menacing but is not.
As for the Bond girls, what can you say about Christmas Jones? Moderately beautiful with a dumb name, Denise Richards portrays the good doctor to the best of her ability. Certainly not the first stupid Bond girl (Goodnight/Stacy, anyone?) she adds nothing to the film but also takes nothing away as her scenes are quite minimal.
Q has a new sidekick working at the esteemed Q Branch this time around. John Cleese as R is a bumbling fool who catches his lab coat on a car door. What would've been better is another Smithers type character seen in the Moore era. To his credit, Cleese would go on to perform more professionally in Die Another Day. TWINE would mark the last appearence of Desmond Llewelyn as "Q" (He soon died after this film's release).
Back again is Valentin who reprises his role last seen in Goldeneye. Valentin is entertaining delivering witty one-liners but towards the end Valentin gets murdered by Elektra. You'd think all the fat on his body would deflect the bullets but it appears not to be the case. Now there's some out there that say "Well, maybe Valentin didn't die!" Face it, he's dead. Live with it, damnit.
The great thing about TWINE is the gadgets/vehicles provided by Q Branch. The new BMW is sleek and simply gorgeous. Armed with missille capability it's a perfect way to get rid of the morning rush hour traffic in front of you. The X-ray specs are another great invention by the Q team. In a funny scene at Valentin's casino, 007 puts on the glasses and probably pops a boner by looking at the women's lingerie. Damn good scene.
The film ends with the silly "I thought Christmas only comes once a year." Even the Moore era didn't have silly shit like that!
In conclusion, this ranks as Brosnan's 2nd best after Goldeneye thanks to Elektra, Q Branch and Brosnan's performance.
